00:00:03.000 --> 00:00:10.520
In this video, we are going to look at how to calculate the surface area of a cylinder and then apply this method to a couple of questions.
00:00:13.640 --> 00:00:17.040
So letโs think about calculating the surface area of a cylinder.
00:00:17.040 --> 00:00:24.320
Now you would have seen before that, in order to calculate the surface area of a prism, you need to find the total area of all of its faces.
00:00:24.840 --> 00:00:28.520
So what we need to think about are what are the different faces that the cylinder has.
00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:37.680
Now one way to do that is to sketch the net of this cylinder, so what it would look like in two dimensions if we were able to unwrap it.
00:00:39.200 --> 00:00:42.640
So first of all, the cylinder has two circular faces.
00:00:42.640 --> 00:00:48.040
It has the faces that are on the top and the base of the cylinder, the ones that Iโm shading in here.
00:00:49.440 --> 00:00:54.400
So when we draw the net of this cylinder, we need to include these two circular faces.
00:00:54.400 --> 00:00:55.480
Now Iโve labelled my diagram.
00:00:55.480 --> 00:01:02.400
It has the measurements โ and ๐ on it; โ is standing for the height of the cylinder and ๐ is standing for the radius of the circle.
00:01:04.280 --> 00:01:06.360
So there are those two circular faces.
00:01:07.080 --> 00:01:13.160
Now a cylinder also has a curved surface, which is this one that Iโm currently shading in in orange here.
00:01:13.160 --> 00:01:16.920
And think about what the shape of that would be.
00:01:16.920 --> 00:01:24.160
Even though itโs a curved surface, if you were to unfold it so that it was a flat surface, you would see that itโs actually a rectangle.
00:01:24.400 --> 00:01:26.000
And you could try this yourself.
00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:33.640
If you find a food can or something like that and unpeel the label, you will see that the shape of that label is in fact a rectangle.
00:01:35.040 --> 00:01:41.880
So if I add it to my net, Iโll see that the net of the cylinder looks something like this, a rectangular part and then these two circular parts.
00:01:43.360 --> 00:01:46.320
So now I need to work out what the area of each of these parts are.
00:01:46.920 --> 00:01:55.080
Well the circle, remember the area of a circle, the formula for that is ๐๐ squared, so each of those circles will be contributing that amount to the area.
00:01:56.520 --> 00:02:02.880
So therefore, I will have a total contribution of two ๐๐ squared from the circular top and the circular base.
00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:07.680
Now letโs think about calculating the area of this rectangle.
00:02:08.320 --> 00:02:14.720
So for rectangle, we do the length multiplied by the width while this measurement here, thatโs just the height of the cylinder.
00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:15.880
So thatโs โ.
00:02:16.240 --> 00:02:20.920
And then I need to think about what is the width of the rectangle of this measurement here.
00:02:22.840 --> 00:02:35.440
Well, if you think about this carefully, or perhaps if you think back to your food can and unwrapping the label, youโll see that this measurement here matches up perfectly with the circumference of the circle on the top and on the base.
00:02:37.040 --> 00:02:47.600
And if you recall then, the formula for calculating the circumference of a circle is either ๐๐ where ๐ represents the diameter or two ๐๐ where ๐ represents the radius.
00:02:47.600 --> 00:02:53.480
And as itโs the radius that Iโve used in other parts of this calculation, itโs the radius that I will again use here.
00:02:55.280 --> 00:03:04.640
So the dimensions of the rectangle then are โ and two ๐๐, which means the area of this rectangle when I multiply them together will be two ๐๐โ.
00:03:06.800 --> 00:03:13.080
So now I have all that I need in order to write down the formula for calculating the total surface area of the cylinder.
00:03:13.080 --> 00:03:15.760
Itโs just gonna be the sum of these three areas.
00:03:17.480 --> 00:03:18.800
So here is that formula.
00:03:19.160 --> 00:03:25.080
The total surface area of the cylinder is equal to two ๐๐ squared plus two ๐๐โ.
00:03:27.120 --> 00:03:32.200
Now when youโre working with cylinders, sometimes you arenโt asked to calculate the total surface area.
00:03:32.720 --> 00:03:38.400
Youโre asked instead to calculate something called the lateral surface area.
00:03:38.400 --> 00:03:42.000
And what this refers to is the curved part of the surface area.
00:03:42.520 --> 00:03:46.760
So in our net of the cylinder, itโs this rectangular part here.
00:03:48.560 --> 00:04:00.120
So if youโre just asked to calculate the lateral surface area, then youโll be using this formula instead, which is that itโs equal to two ๐๐โ as itโs only the area of that rectangle that weโre interested in.
00:04:03.200 --> 00:04:04.960
So letโs look at applying this to a question.
00:04:05.520 --> 00:04:09.760
The question asked us to calculate the lateral surface area of the cylinder below.
00:04:10.160 --> 00:04:16.120
And we can see this cylinder has a height of 13 centimetres and a diameter of 10 centimetres.
00:04:18.360 --> 00:04:22.240
So first of all, note the question has asked for the lateral surface area.
00:04:22.440 --> 00:04:27.760
So weโre only interested in that curved part, not the full surface area including the top and the base.
00:04:29.960 --> 00:04:35.560
So remember the formula that we need here is that the lateral surface area is equal to two ๐๐โ.
00:04:36.240 --> 00:04:42.440
So in this question, โ, well thatโs 13 centimetres, and ๐ remember presents the radius.
00:04:42.440 --> 00:04:43.480
We havenโt got the radius.
00:04:43.480 --> 00:04:45.080
Weโve got the diameter which is 10.
00:04:45.600 --> 00:04:48.240
So the radius is half of that which is five.
00:04:48.640 --> 00:04:55.520
So our calculation then is the lateral surface area is two times ๐ times five times 13.
00:04:57.480 --> 00:05:04.480
Now actually remember that that two ๐๐ in the formula for the lateral surface area is representing the circumference of the circle.
00:05:04.920 --> 00:05:07.640
And another way to write that would have been ๐๐.
00:05:09.480 --> 00:05:20.080
So rather than dividing this value of 10 by two to get the radius and including the factor of two in the formula, we could actually have just done ๐๐โ and then ๐ times 10 times 13.
00:05:20.520 --> 00:05:24.960
So rather than dividing by two and multiplying by two, we could have got about in a slightly simpler way.
00:05:26.840 --> 00:05:29.280
At any way, it gives us the same result in our calculation.
00:05:29.280 --> 00:05:37.000
So two times ๐ times five times 13, this gives me 130๐ as the lateral surface area.
00:05:37.360 --> 00:05:42.600
I could leave my answer in terms of ๐, if thatโs how it was requested or if I didnโt have a calculator.
00:05:42.920 --> 00:05:50.680
But if I go on and evaluate my answer as a decimal, then it gives me an answer of 408.4 centimetres squared.
00:05:51.000 --> 00:05:53.760
And thatโs been rounded to one decimal place or the nearest tenth.
00:05:56.120 --> 00:05:58.080
Units, remember, weโre talking about area.
00:05:58.320 --> 00:06:03.280
So I need to square units with my answer, which is why the centimetres squared in this instance.
00:06:06.200 --> 00:06:08.120
Right, letโs look at our next question on this.
00:06:08.440 --> 00:06:12.760
This time we are asked to calculate the total surface area of the cylinder below.
00:06:13.760 --> 00:06:17.280
So I need to recall the formula for calculating the total surface area.
00:06:17.760 --> 00:06:20.920
Remember, that is going to include the top and the base this time.
00:06:22.880 --> 00:06:24.320
So here is the formula we need.
00:06:24.600 --> 00:06:29.520
The total surface area is equal to two ๐๐ squared plus two ๐๐โ.
00:06:30.080 --> 00:06:34.200
So itโs just a question of substituting the correct values into this formula.
00:06:34.840 --> 00:06:39.080
The radius is six millimetres and the height is 25 millimetres.
00:06:41.320 --> 00:06:48.000
So the calculation will be two times ๐ times six squared plus two times ๐ times six times 25.
00:06:48.600 --> 00:06:52.240
The brackets, I donโt actually need them; theyโre not mathematically necessary.
00:06:52.560 --> 00:06:57.080
Iโve just put them in so that you can see the two parts of the calculation more clearly.
00:06:59.120 --> 00:07:06.640
So a couple of things to watch out for then, have you been asked for the total surface area or the lateral surface area?
00:07:06.640 --> 00:07:10.280
So do you need to include the top and the base or not.
00:07:10.800 --> 00:07:14.720
And also have you been given the radius or have you been given the diameter of the cylinder?
00:07:16.360 --> 00:07:19.760
And if youโve been given the diameter, you just need to think carefully about how youโre going to use it in the formula.
00:07:19.760 --> 00:07:25.280
So if I evaluate these, then I have 72๐ plus 300๐.
00:07:27.840 --> 00:07:33.920
So that gives me an overall total of 372๐ for the total surface area.
00:07:34.280 --> 00:07:37.240
Again, I could leave my answer at this stage, but Iโll evaluate it as a decimal.
00:07:37.640 --> 00:07:43.800
And doing that gives me an answer of 1168.7 millimetres squared.
00:07:43.800 --> 00:07:47.080
And again, that answer has been rounded to one decimal place.
00:07:49.880 --> 00:07:52.920
Okay, this is the final question that weโre going to look at in this video.
00:07:53.640 --> 00:08:00.600
It says the total surface area of a cylinder of radius two meters is 28๐ meters squared.
00:08:01.360 --> 00:08:03.120
Calculate the height of the cylinder.
00:08:05.560 --> 00:08:08.880
So this question is an example of one when we need to work backwards.
00:08:08.880 --> 00:08:14.040
Weโre given the surface area and we have to work out one of the missing dimensions of the cylinder.
00:08:16.320 --> 00:08:18.960
So first of all, we need to recall the relevant formula.
00:08:19.400 --> 00:08:22.840
And reading the question carefully, it says the total surface area.
00:08:23.120 --> 00:08:26.080
So we need the formula for total rather than lateral.
00:08:27.760 --> 00:08:34.280
So itโs this formula here, total surface area is equal to two ๐๐ squared plus two ๐๐โ.
00:08:36.480 --> 00:08:44.440
So we can use this formula to form an equation involving the radius and the total surface area that we do know and the height that we donโt.
00:08:44.640 --> 00:08:49.240
Once weโve got the equation, weโll will be able to solve it in order to work out what this height is.
00:08:51.040 --> 00:08:52.400
So letโs form this equation.
00:08:52.400 --> 00:08:56.320
Iโm gonna substitute ๐ was equal to two into this formula.
00:08:56.320 --> 00:09:03.520
So two ๐๐ squared is gonna be two times ๐ times two squared.
00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:11.440
And then two ๐๐โ is gonna be two times ๐ times two times this value โ that we donโt know.
00:09:11.880 --> 00:09:15.680
And weโre told that is all equal to 28๐.
00:09:17.720 --> 00:09:19.560
So Iโve set up the start of my equation.
00:09:20.360 --> 00:09:21.800
Now I can simplify it a bit.
00:09:21.800 --> 00:09:24.520
So looking at the first term, thatโs gonna simplify.
00:09:24.520 --> 00:09:28.120
Well two squared is four and then multiplied by two is eight.
00:09:29.280 --> 00:09:31.120
So I have eight ๐ for that first term.
00:09:31.360 --> 00:09:36.440
And then the second term, two times two is four, so Iโm gonna have four ๐โ for that second term.
00:09:38.240 --> 00:09:39.840
So that brings me to this stage here.
00:09:39.840 --> 00:09:43.760
Eight ๐ plus four ๐โ is equal to 28๐.
00:09:44.880 --> 00:09:54.800
Now all of those terms have a factor of ๐ in, so actually I can divide through by ๐ or cancel out that factor to simplify this equation a little bit.
00:09:56.760 --> 00:10:06.160
If I just write it out again then so we can see a little bit more clearly, so I can see that my equation is actually just four โ plus eight is equal to 28.
00:10:08.000 --> 00:10:13.880
Solving this equation that is relatively straightforward, the first step is I need to subtract eight from both sides of the equation.
00:10:15.360 --> 00:10:17.800
And so that gives me four โ is equal to 20.
00:10:18.200 --> 00:10:21.520
And then I need to divide both sides of the equation by four.
00:10:23.120 --> 00:10:25.120
And so that gives me the โ is equal to five.
00:10:25.960 --> 00:10:28.760
โ, remember, represents the height so it needs a unit.
00:10:28.760 --> 00:10:36.240
And if you look back at the question, all of the units were meters and meters squared, so this must be five meters for the height of the cylinder.
00:10:38.680 --> 00:10:46.920
So this question involved using the information that we were given to set up and then solve an equation in order to work out a missing dimension of the cylinder.
00:10:49.400 --> 00:10:57.440
To answer a similar question where it was the radius that was missing would be a more complex problem, as it would result in a quadratic equation to solve.
00:10:57.880 --> 00:11:00.280
But that is a possible extension of this.
00:11:02.440 --> 00:11:07.920
So to summarise then, weโve looked at how to calculate the lateral and the total surface area of a cylinder.
00:11:07.920 --> 00:11:11.600
Weโve seen where that formula comes from in terms of the net of the cylinder.
00:11:12.400 --> 00:11:17.640
Weโve applied it to a couple of more straightforward questions where we just have to substitute the relevant values.
00:11:17.640 --> 00:11:24.560
And then finally, weโve looked at a question that involves working backwards from a known surface area to calculate the height of the cylinder.
